# FI imposes $4.4M penalty on Loomis for AML violations
Sweden's Financial Inspectorate (FI) has decided on a sanction fee of 40 million SEK against Loomis for serious deficiencies in anti-money laundering controls. This is one of the larger penalty decisions that FI has made against a company in the cash handling industry.
## Decision Summary
* **Sanction Fee**: 40 million SEK (approximately $4.4M)
* **Violation**: Inadequate money laundering risk assessments
* **Amount Monitored**: 117 billion SEK in cash deposits from foreign banks without adequate controls
## Context - Loomis's Role in Sweden
Loomis plays a central role in the Swedish cash handling chain, responsible for transport and handling of cash throughout the country. FI's Director General Daniel Barr emphasized that Loomis has a "central role in the cash handling chain in Sweden."
## Simultaneous Decisions in Financial Industry
At the same time as FI announced the Loomis decision, it also made decisions about other sanctions:
* **Nasdaq**: 100 million SEK penalty for shortcomings in insider trading surveillance
* **Swedish Church's Pension Association**: 5 million SEK fine
## Seriousness of the Violations
The underlying issues were serious and meant that Loomis for a period lacked adequate systems to identify and manage money laundering risks. The 117 billion SEK that was monitored came from foreign banks without the company having adequate control mechanisms.
## Significance for Swedish Payment Infrastructure
This decision marks a clear tougher stance from FI against the payments industry, especially companies that handle cash. For Loomis, which is one of the key players in Swedish cash handling, this means both a financial burden and a market and brand challenge.
## Signal to the Industry
FI's decision sends a strong signal to the entire Swedish financial and payments industry about increased supervision and demands for rigorous compliance with anti-money laundering legislation. At the same time, it shows a stricter stance from the supervisory authority after several years of relatively low sanction levels.
## Consequences for Loomis
In addition to the direct sanction fee, the decision may lead to:
1. **Supervision**: FI may decide on increased supervision of the company's operations
2. **Reputational Risk**: Serious damage to the company's brand
3. **Costs**: Increased investments in compliance systems and personnel
4. **Customers**: Risk of losing customers that set high requirements for risk management
