Ireland's Revolut Revolution – a Warning to Swedish Banks

Published June 21, 2026 | 5 minute read

The Swedish banking system is facing a tough challenge. Irish Revolut has evolved from digital wallet to full-fledged bank with 3.4 million customers in Ireland – more than 80% of the adult population, according to Financial Times.

Revolut's Irish Success:

  • Customer base: 3.4 million customers in Ireland (>80% of adults)
  • Global valuation: $75 billion
  • Total customers: 75 million globally, across 40 countries
  • IPO plans: Possible 2028 IPO, rumored at $200 billion
  • Recognition: Jamie Dimon (JPMorgan) mentioned Revolut in shareholder letter

The Swedish Expansion

Revolut's expansion is no longer theoretical – it's happening. The fintech giant has now grown from 200,000 to 800,000 Swedish customers in just three years, according to Placera.

"The goal is to reach 3 million Swedish customers by 2030, with half as primary banking customers," says Philip Hallsmar, Sweden Country Manager for Revolut.

Nordic revenues have doubled to 1.2 billion SEK last year, and now Revolut is opening a Swedish branch in 2026 with full integrated support for Swish, Bankgiro, Bank-ID, and Swedish IBAN.

What Does This Mean for Sweden?

Revolut's investment in Sweden creates several questions for traditional banks:

  • Customer competition: Direct competition for both private and business customers
  • Payment market: Threat to Swish's dominance in the Swedish payment system
  • Service offering: Revolut combines banking services with payments, investments, and insurance
  • Pricing power: Digital platforms can offer lower fees

Bank-ID Integration:

With full Bank-ID support, Revolut can offer Swedish customers the same identity verification as traditional banks. This opens the door for a multitude of new services on the Swedish market.

Analysis: Is Swedish Banking Sector Too Complacent?

The Swedish banking sector has long been characterized by oligopoly with Swedbank, Nordea, Handelsbanken, and SEB as dominant players. Revolut's entry marks a new era of increased competition.

"This is a clear warning signal for Swedish banks," comments an industry analyst. "Revolut has shown they can not only compete on price – they can compete on the entire customer journey."

Swedish Banks' Response

Traditional banks have started to respond:

  • Swedbank and SEB are investing in digital platforms
  • Banks are strengthening partnerships with existing payment players like Swish
  • Development of own digital services to meet competition

Swish in Focus

Swish's role in the equation is central. With over 8 million users and presence in 95% of Swedish stores, Swish is still dominant in payments. But Revolut's integrated solution – where payments, banking services, and commerce go in one single app – challenges this dominance.

Revolut in Sweden Timeline:

  • 2021: License to offer banking services in Sweden
  • 2023: Launch of Swish integration
  • 2024: Over 500,000 Swedish customers
  • 2025: Full banking license
  • 2026: Opening of Swedish branch with Bank-ID
  • 2030: Target: 3 million Swedish customers

Future Outlook

"We're now seeing the beginning of a new era for finance in Sweden," says an industry expert. "Revolut is just the first – there will be more international players seeing the potential in the Swedish market."

For Swedish banks, it's now about either adapting or risking being marginalized. Digitalization is no longer a choice – it's a necessity for survival.
